Procedure:
Enlarges and enhances breasts through insertion
of saline-filled implants. A breast augmentation can
be beneficial to a young woman who is unhappy with
her natural breast size, or to a woman who has lost
some of her assets due to pregnancy or aging.
Length of
Procedure: About 1
to 1.5 hours
Anesthesia:
Usually performed under general anesthesia
In/Outpatient:
Outpatient
Risks: As
with any surgery, there are certain potential risks
of breast augmentation. However, they are relatively
rare and should not deter a well-informed patient.
Some of these include infection, injury to nerves,
healing problems, excess scarring, and then, more specific
to breast augmentation, rupture or deflation of implants,
asymmetry, and skin rippling. Most complications would
not interfere with the final results, though some might
require a repeat procedure.
Recovery
Back to work: Usually within several
days to one week
Physical contact with breasts: Usually
safe after one week, though some patients need to wait
closer to three weeks
Fading of scars: Can happen over several
months, though full fading usually takes closer to
a year or so
Duration of
Breast Augmentation: Can depend on patient's
medical history and recovery situation
